The Uttar Pradesh government has implemented a new labor policy for private employees, clearly defining leave and working hours. The new law aims to provide employees with a better work-life balance and increase transparency in companies. These changes will provide several direct benefits to employees.

The Uttar Pradesh government has made several significant changes to labor laws to protect the interests of employees working in the state’s private sector. These changes have been implemented primarily under the Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1962, and the UP Factories Act. Their aim is to provide employees with a safe, transparent, and balanced work environment.

Working Hours and Overtime Rules

According to the new system, an employee can now work a maximum of 9 hours per day, while the weekly work limit remains at 48 hours. This means the total weekly workload will remain unchanged, but working hours will be flexible.

If an employee works beyond the prescribed limit, they will be paid double the normal wage rate for overtime. Furthermore, the quarterly overtime limit has been increased from 125 hours to 144 hours, providing employees with the opportunity to earn additional income if needed, working hours for private employees fixed in UP.

New Rest and Leave Arrangements

Now, every employee is required to have a rest interval of at least 30 minutes after working for five consecutive hours. In terms of holidays, 10 days of casual leave and 15 days of sick leave after six months of service have been established.

One day of weekly leave is also mandatory every week. Employees working on national holidays such as Republic Day, Independence Day, and Gandhi Jayanti will be given double wages or an alternative holiday.

Safety and Equal Opportunity for Women

New provisions for appointment letters and fines

Employers will now be required to provide appointment letters to every employee, increasing employment transparency and job security. Strict action has also been taken against employers who violate the rules—a fine of up to ₹2,000 for the first offense and up to ₹10,000 for the second offense.
