According to the new calendar, next year there will be a total of 24 public holidays (gazetted holidays), while employees will also receive 31 optional/restricted holidays. New Labor Codes 2026

The government has replaced the old labor codes for employees with new labor codes. These four new codes will be implemented by the central government from April 1, 2026. The government is moving rapidly towards their implementation. Labor and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that the ministry has initiated the process of finalizing the rules. These rules will be pre-published soon, after which the public will be able to provide their feedback within 45 days. Once these rules are notified, the new labor system will be implemented in the country.

5 Major Changes That Bring Relief to Employees

The main objective of the new labor codes is to provide greater security, flexibility, and better facilities to workers in the country. These rules will bring several major changes to employees’ lives:

    1. 4-day work, 3-day leave option

While the work limit remains at 8 hours a day, a 48-hour work week has been extended. This means that companies can provide employees with 3 days off per week by requiring them to work four extra hours. Clear arrangements have also been made for overtime, ensuring employees receive full compensation for their extra work. This will provide employees with flexibility and an improved work-life balance.

    1. Free health checkups for those over 40

For the first time, the government has introduced a free health checkup for employees aged 40 and above. This step is considered a major improvement towards improving the health and safety of workers.

    1. Freedom for women to work in all shifts

The new labor code provides equal opportunities for women to work in any shift (whether night or day). This will open new avenues for women’s employment and increase their participation in various sectors.

    1. Appointment Letter and Right to Equal Pay

It will now be mandatory to provide an appointment letter to every employee upon hiring. This will clarify job conditions and enhance job security. The provision of “equal pay for equal work” has also been strengthened, ensuring equal pay for both men and women in similar roles.

    1. Expanding Social Security Coverage

The government aims to bring 1 billion people under social security coverage by March 2026. This is more than the current number (approximately 94 crore) and demonstrates a significant increase in social security coverage compared to 2015.

Enforcement of the Law is the responsibility of the Center and States:

Labour laws are a subject of the “Concurrent List,” so both the Center and States will have to notify rules at their respective levels to implement this new labour system simultaneously across the country. This new labor code is considered to be the biggest reform that will change the way of working in the country.

  • Good news for women employees: 1 period leave per month,12 holidays per year; eligible employees

Karnataka Women Employee Paid Menstrual Leave

1 period leave per month: The order clearly states that the authority competent to grant casual leave can grant menstrual leave, and no medical certificate is required to avail of this leave.

    1 period leave per month

Good news for women employees in Karnataka. The Siddaramaiah government has taken a major decision in the interest of women employees. Now, women government employees will receive one period leave per month, meaning they will receive a total of 12 days of special leave per year. This order by the state government follows a petition filed by the Bangalore Hotel Association in the Karnataka High Court, challenging the menstrual leave notification. The petition argued that the rule is discriminatory and excludes women in government jobs, even though the majority of women in the state are employed in government departments.

Karnataka Women Government Employees Will Receive Paid 1 period leave per month

In fact, the Menstrual Leave Policy (MLP) 2025 was approved in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on October 9th. Under this, women employees working in the private sector (private companies and industrial sectors) will be granted one day of paid leave every month. A government order in this regard was issued on November 12, 2025.

Now, the state government has issued a new order. Under this, women government employees will also receive one day of paid period leave. The state government has also approved a new policy under which all female government employees between the ages of 18 and 52 will be granted one day of paid period leave every month, or 12 days annually. With the new order, more than 1.5 lakh women government employees will benefit from this new leave policy.

These women employees will benefit, no medical certificate required.

In addition to women government employees, women working in private companies and industrial sectors will also benefit. This order will also apply to outsourced and contract employees.

This facility will apply to all industries and establishments registered under the Factories Act 1948, the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act 1961, the Plantation Workers Act 1951, the Beedi and Cigar Workers’ Conditions of Employment Act 1966, and the Motor Transport Workers Act 1961.

The order clearly states that the authority competent to grant casual leave may grant menstrual leave, and no medical certificate is required to avail of this leave. This leave must be recorded separately in the leave/attendance book and menstrual leave should not be combined with any other leave.

  • IndiGo Pilot Shortage: Troubled by Pilot Shortage, New Duty Rules Create Chaos

    IndiGo Pilot Shortage

IndiGo Pilot Shortage: India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is facing significant flight delays and cancellations due to a shortage of pilots and crew members.

    IndiGo Pilot Shortage

IndiGo Pilot Shortage: India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is facing significant flight delays and cancellations due to a shortage of pilots and crew members. Strict rest and duty time limitations (FDTL), implemented from November 1, have exacerbated this crisis, impacting dozens of flights across the country on Wednesday. Passengers faced wait times of up to seven hours, while the number of cancelled flights increased at airports like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.

    Impact of New Rules

The new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules mandate a mandatory 48-hour weekly rest period and strict restrictions on duty hours to prevent pilot fatigue. These rules were phased in from July 2025 and came into full effect on November 1. Although aviation regulator DGCA had granted some temporary exemptions, airlines like IndiGo are facing a crew shortage after full implementation.

Over the past few weeks, IndiGo’s operations team has requested pilots on sick leave to return soon and asked others to cancel special leave. The Airlines Pilots Association (ALPA), a pilot organization, has alleged misinterpretation of these rules in a meeting with the Director General of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The organization says airlines are misusing the rules to deal with the crisis.

    Wednesday’s Situation(IndiGo Pilot Shortage)

On Wednesday, 70 flights were cancelled from Mumbai and Bengaluru, 42 of which were from Bengaluru and 32 from Mumbai. Additionally, 19 flights (both arrivals and departures) were cancelled in Hyderabad, while Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport reported cancellations for the second consecutive day. Several flights, including the Mumbai-Maldives flight, were affected due to crew no-shows.

According to government data, only 35% of IndiGo flights arrived on time on December 2, compared to 49.5% on December 1. On Tuesday night, a global glitch in the Amadeus software disrupted the check-in process for an hour, affecting other airlines like Air India, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet. Additionally, a software update on Airbus A320 aircraft caused some delays, though IndiGo claimed it did not result in any cancellations.

Passengers are furious. Social media has been flooded with complaints, with people reporting long waits, refund issues, and a lack of alternative flights. One passenger tweeted, “IndiGo has cheated again, flight cancelled after a seven-hour wait!” Chaos prevailed at airports, especially in metro cities.

    Airline’s View

IndiGo issued a statement saying, “IndiGo has issued a statement saying, ‘Over the past few days, technical issues, airport congestion, and operational requirements have caused delays and cancellations for some flights. Our teams are working to restore normalcy as soon as possible.’” The company has offered affected passengers the option of alternative flights or a full refund and advised them to check their flight status before going to the airport.

According to the CFO, the new FDTL rules will result in a slight increase in operating costs, but safety is being prioritized. IndiGo stated that the recruitment process has been expedited to address the crew shortage.

    Broader Context

The Indian aviation sector is already grappling with a pilot shortage. The implementation of the new rules has led to an increase in reports of fatigue, which the DGCA has aimed to address by strengthening safety. Experts believe this crisis is short-lived, but passengers may face further inconvenience in the coming days. Other airlines, such as SpiceJet, are also lagging behind in punctuality.

If you are booking an IndiGo flight, be sure to check status updates on the website. The DGCA has directed airlines to maintain transparency and inform passengers. This issue is on the radar of the Aviation Ministry, where a review meeting is expected soon.
