41st Anniversary of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy
The Madhya Pradesh government has declared a local holiday on the 41st anniversary of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the world’s worst industrial disaster. This holiday will apply to all government offices, schools, colleges, banks, and public enterprises in Bhopal city and district.

Regarding the anniversary of the gas tragedy, Bhopal District Magistrate Kaushalendra Vikram Singh said that Section 144 will remain in effect in the city to maintain peace and pay tribute. Prior permission will be required for any procession or demonstration.
Nearly 5,300 people died in the gas tragedy. Thousands were killed when methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas leaked from the Union Carbide factory on the night of December 2-3, 1984. Millions continue to suffer its effects today. According to official figures, approximately 5,300 people died that night and the subsequent aftermath. Non-governmental estimates put the death toll at over 20,000. Every year, December 3 is observed as a day of mourning in Bhopal.
